What to do right now

Safety first. If there is active fire, smoke you cannot explain, or a gas smell, leave the building and call 911. Do not go back inside until the fire department says it is safe.

Water

  • Stay out of standing water if outlets, cords or appliances may be wet. Shut off power to wet areas only if you can reach the breaker from a dry spot.
  • Shut off the water: the main valve, or the valve behind the toilet, sink, dishwasher or washer.
  • Photograph and video the water and damage before you clean up.
  • Move furniture, rugs and valuables to a dry area and mop up what you safely can.
  • Wet drywall, carpet and pad can start growing mold in 24 to 48 hours, so get drying started quickly.

Fire

  • Call 911 for any active fire. Get everyone out and stay out.
  • Do not turn on power, gas or water until the fire department or a qualified pro says it is safe.
  • Photograph the damage before anything is moved or thrown away.
  • Secure openings: broken windows, doors and roof holes may need board-up or tarps.
  • Call your insurance company and ask what temporary housing help your policy includes.

Smoke

  • Do not wipe or scrub soot on walls, ceilings or upholstery. It smears and can set stains.
  • Do not run the furnace or AC until a pro checks it, because ducts can spread soot.
  • Open windows for fresh air if it is safe to do so.
  • Throw out food, medicine and cosmetics that were exposed to heat or smoke.
  • Photograph smoke staining before cleaning and keep damaged items for the adjuster.

Insurance claim help

Claim basics

  • Photograph everything before cleanup. Take wide shots and close-ups of the damage, plus damaged items and model numbers.
  • Call your insurer and get a claim number. Write down who you talked to and when.
  • Prevent further damage and keep receipts. Most policies expect reasonable steps like shutting off water, tarping or board-up. Save receipts for supplies, emergency work and hotel stays.
  • You can choose your own contractor. Your insurer may suggest one, but the choice is usually yours.
  • Ask about your coverage. Sudden losses like a burst pipe are often covered. Gradual leaks, flooding from outside, and mold may be limited or excluded. Ask your agent what your policy says.

This is general information, not legal or insurance advice. Your policy and your insurer decide what is covered.

Questions to ask any restoration company

  • Are your technicians IICRC certified for this type of work?
  • Are you registered as a contractor in Idaho? Can I see the registration number?
  • Are you insured, and can you send proof?
  • Will I get a written estimate before work starts?
  • Who bills the insurance company, and what will I owe out of pocket?
  • How will you document the damage and drying for my claim?
