When something difficult has happened

If you are dealing with an unattended death, a suicide, a violent crime or a serious injury in a home, vehicle or business, we are sorry. You should not have to clean it yourself, and in most cases you should not try. This page explains what to expect, how to stay safe, and how cleanup is usually paid for, so you can make the next call with a little more clarity.

If anyone is in danger or needs medical help, call 911. If you or someone close to you is struggling after a loss, you can call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, at any hour.

Please do not touch or clean the area

What to do first

  1. Wait for law enforcement or the coroner to release the scene. If police or the county coroner are involved, nothing should be moved or cleaned until they say so.
  2. Close off the area. Shut the door if you can, keep children and pets away, and turn off the HVAC in that part of the house if odor is spreading.
  3. Do not throw anything away that may be needed by investigators or for an insurance claim.
  4. Write down the case or report number and the name of the agency or officer.
  5. Call your insurance company (homeowners, renters, landlord or commercial) and ask whether biohazard or trauma cleanup is covered.
  6. Request a call back using the form. You can say as much or as little as you want in the message box; "trauma cleanup needed" is enough.
