Why smoke damage goes further than the fire

Smoke travels with heat and air pressure. It follows hallways, gets pulled through the furnace and ductwork, and settles on cooler surfaces like exterior walls, windows and the insides of closets. A small fire on the stove can leave a film on every room in the house. The residue is acidic, so it can etch glass, tarnish metal fixtures, yellow plastics and get into electronics over the following days and weeks.

Not all smoke is the same. A fast, hot fire leaves dry, powdery soot. A smoldering fire leaves greasy, smeary residue. Protein fires (burned food left on the stove) leave a nearly invisible film with a very strong odor. Each type needs different cleaning methods, and using the wrong one, like wiping greasy soot with a wet rag, can smear it deeper into paint and fabric.

Wildfire smoke in the Treasure Valley

Boise and Nampa regularly get smoke from regional wildfires in late summer, and homes near the Boise Foothills, along the river corridors and on the open edges of town can see ash and ember exposure from nearby grass fires. Usually wildfire smoke means changing furnace filters and cleaning. When there is heavy ash inside, a persistent odor after the air clears, or a fire burned close to the property, a professional assessment may be worth it. Some homeowners policies cover smoke damage from a nearby wildfire even when the house did not burn; ask your insurer.

What to do in the first hour

  1. Make sure the area is safe and the fire department has cleared it.
  2. Turn the furnace or AC off so the system does not keep spreading soot. Do not run it again until the ducts are inspected. If you run it later, use a new filter.
  3. Ventilate by opening windows if outdoor air quality allows. Check air quality on smoky days before you open up.
  4. Do not wipe soot off walls, ceilings or upholstery with water or household cleaners. It can smear and set the stain. Avoid touching surfaces; skin oils set soot too.
  5. Protect yourself. Wear gloves and an N95 mask if you must go in. Keep children, older adults and pets out.
  6. Throw out exposed food, medicine and cosmetics that were near heat or smoke, including items in pantries that were not sealed.
  7. Photograph every room, including inside cabinets and closets, before cleaning starts.

What professional smoke cleanup involves

Painting over smoke residue without cleaning and sealing first usually lets the stain and odor bleed back through.
